01 / What it is
What X-Pac actually is
X-Pac (sometimes written X-PAC) is a multi-layer laminated fabric originally developed by Dimension-Polyant, a US-based maker of high-performance sailcloth, for the demands of competitive sailing. Around the early 2010s, it crossed over into ultralight backpacking, military gear, and high-end EDC because it offered something standard nylon could not: structural stability without the weight penalty.
Where a typical 500D Cordura backpack relies on a single dense weave to resist tearing and abrasion, X-Pac stacks three engineered layers into a single laminate, each layer doing one thing well.
02 / Construction
The three layers, top to bottom
- Outer face: a lightweight ripstop polyester or nylon, dyed and woven for abrasion resistance and color stability.
- Middle layer, the X-grid: a polyester fiber grid laid in an X pattern between the face and film. This grid is the namesake of the fabric. It dramatically reduces stretch under tension, so a loaded X-Pac bag holds its shape rather than sagging.
- Bottom layer: a polyester film bonded to the underside that acts as a vapor barrier. This is what gives X-Pac its inherent water resistance, water has to defeat the laminate before it can reach the contents.
The three layers are bonded under heat and pressure into a single continuous fabric. The result is lighter than a comparable single-weave nylon at the same level of strength, and noticeably less stretchy.
03 / Compared to nylon
X-Pac vs standard nylon, why it matters in daily carry
- Holds its shape. A normal nylon sling bag deforms over time as straps and loads pull on it. X-Pac stays flat and squared because the X-grid resists stretch in two directions.
- Water-resistant by construction, not coating. A DWR finish on standard nylon wears off after repeated laundering and abrasion. X-Pac's water resistance lives inside the laminate. Light rain, splashes, and wet shoulders are not an issue.
- Lighter at equivalent strength. A typical Vesta X-Pac VX-21 weighs roughly 6.1 oz/yd squared, compared to 9.6 oz/yd squared for 500D Cordura, about 35 to 40 percent lighter at comparable tear strength.
- Quieter. The laminate damps the rustle that softer woven nylon makes when packed against itself. For commuters and travelers carrying a Switch, a tablet, or a laptop, this is a noticeable everyday upgrade.
- Distinct visual texture. The X-grid is faintly visible through the outer face, giving X-Pac its signature technical appearance.
X-Pac is not the cheapest fabric Vesta could specify. It is the one we keep coming back to because every day of carry confirms it was the right choice.
04 / Grades
Vesta X-Pac grades
Dimension-Polyant offers X-Pac in several constructions. Vesta primarily uses two:
- VX-21 is our default for sling bags, pouches, and daily carry packs. The outer face is a soft 210-denier nylon, stable, abrasion-tolerant, and finished in matte black. Best balance of weight, durability, and feel for everyday use.
- VX-42, used case by case, is a heavier 420-denier version for products where peak abrasion resistance outweighs weight savings. Used selectively in high-wear panels.
If a Vesta product is built with X-Pac, the grade is listed in the Details section of that product page. If it is not listed, it is not X-Pac. We do not generalize.
05 / Care
Care and longevity
- Spot-clean with a damp cloth and mild soap. Air dry.
- Do not machine wash, do not tumble dry, do not iron. The polyester film layer is heat-sensitive, a hot wash or dryer will damage the laminate.
- Do not bleach or use solvent-based cleaners.
- For salt or sand exposure, rinse with cool fresh water and air-dry away from direct sunlight.
- Avoid prolonged direct UV exposure when possible, the dyed face will retain color longest in shaded storage.
Treated this way, an X-Pac bag will outlast typical nylon by years, holding shape, water resistance, and appearance through hundreds of carry cycles.
06 / Roadmap
Where Vesta is going with X-Pac
X-Pac is a strategic material choice for Vesta. Our current X-Pac products are the start of a broader carry line. Additional X-Pac bags, pouches, and modular accessories are in development. As we expand, every X-Pac product will continue to list its grade and laminate construction transparently on the product page, and our care guidance will stay consistent across the line.
If you have a question about a specific X-Pac product, fabric grade, or care detail, write to support@vesta-brands.com and we will give you a straight answer.
